Our Corsican adventure led us to Ajaccio, the island's capital, a bustling port city brimming with history and coastal charm. While the dramatic landscapes of Corsica's interior often steal the show, Ajaccio offers a unique urban experience, perfect for a short visit before or after exploring the island's natural wonders.

Aromatic Beginnings and Coastal Strolls

Our day began with the rich aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans at a charming roastery just off the main street. Fuelled by our caffeine fix, we embarked on a scenic walk along Ajaccio's seafront, taking in the small white-sand beach and the lively restaurants and bars that line the coast. The calm, clear waters of the cove beckoned, a tempting escape from the city's hustle and bustle.

Just a short walk from the beach lies the Citadel of Ajaccio, a historic fortress dating back to 1492. Surprisingly, entry was free, allowing us to explore the grounds and discover its intriguing past, including its use as a prison during World War II.

Unveiling the Citadel's Secrets

While the Citadel's interior proved somewhat sparse, its history offered glimpses into its fascinating past. From the old washing area to the gunpowder magazine and the ingenious flying buttresses designed to direct explosions upwards, each corner held a story. The viewpoint offered stunning panoramic vistas of the Gulf of Ajaccio, a worthwhile reward for our exploration.

Ajaccio's connection to Napoleon Bonaparte, who was born here, adds another layer of historical significance. His mother's flight to Ajaccio from Corte, a story we learned during our earlier travels, resonated as we walked through the city streets.

Ajaccio presented a mix of old-world charm and ongoing renovation. Building sites dotted the cityscape, a sign of the city's evolution. The elegant Hôtel de Ville stood as a testament to Ajaccio's civic pride, its grandeur hinting at the important functions it hosts.

The waterfront buzzed with activity, tour operators offering excursions to various destinations, including Bono, a place we had fondly explored earlier. The constant flow of cars and pedestrians gave Ajaccio a distinctly capital city vibe.

A vibrant Saturday market offered a sensory feast of local produce, aromatic spices, and freshly baked pastries. The reasonable prices, especially compared to the waterfront restaurants, made it a perfect spot for a delicious and affordable snack. We indulged in some traditional pastries, savoring the authentic flavors of Corsica.

Two main streets defined Ajaccio's urban landscape: the bustling main thoroughfare and a more grungy, pedestrian-only street lined with shops, restaurants, and souvenir stalls. This pedestrian street offered a more relaxed atmosphere, ideal for leisurely strolls and enjoying a meal.

Final Impressions and Farewell to Ajaccio

While Ajaccio offered glimpses of charm, it felt somewhat underwhelming compared to the breathtaking natural beauty we had experienced elsewhere in Corsica. Perhaps a shorter visit, or using it as a base for boat tours, would be ideal. For us, the mountains held a stronger allure.

After a final lunch at a local bagel shop, we packed our bags and headed to the port, ready to embark on the ferry back to mainland France. Ajaccio, while not the highlight of our Corsican journey, offered a unique urban experience that rounded out our exploration of this captivating island.
