Iceland's Ring Road in Winter: A Thrilling Van Life Adventure

Chasing Waterfalls and Black Beaches

Our Icelandic Ring Road adventure began with a visit to Seljalandsfoss waterfall, a breathtaking 60-meter cascade. Despite being a popular tourist spot, its sheer power and beauty were undeniable. The recent rains had amplified its roar, creating a truly awe-inspiring spectacle. Two smaller waterfalls had even sprung up nearby, adding to the dramatic scenery.

Braving the cold and wet weather, we continued to the famous black sand beach, home to the iconic DC-3 plane wreckage. While a shuttle was required due to the 4km distance and harsh conditions, the photo opportunity was well worth it. The stark contrast of the plane against the black sand created a haunting yet beautiful image.

Van Life in Iceland: Our Cozy Home on Wheels

Our camper van, a Camp Easy Clever 4x4 Edition, provided the perfect mobile base for our adventure. Equipped with a kitchen, fridge, sink, and a cozy bed, it allowed us to embrace the freedom of van life. The built-in heater was a lifesaver in the freezing temperatures, and having all our belongings with us simplified our travels immensely.

The van offered a seamless travel experience. We could park anywhere, enjoy meals with a view, and wake up ready to explore. The integrated iPad provided real-time weather and road condition updates, essential for navigating Iceland's unpredictable winter weather.

Glacier Hiking and Icelandic Horses

Iceland's landscapes are truly unique. Driving through farmland, we noticed the absence of cows, replaced by Icelandic horses, integral to the country's history and culture. These hardy animals once served as transportation, shelter, and even a food source.

Our glacier hiking adventure at Sólheimajökull glacier, led by Icelandic Mountain Guides, was a highlight of the trip. Equipped with crampons, we navigated the icy terrain, exploring surface caves and marveling at the deep blue ice. The experience provided a stark reminder of global warming's impact, as the glacier had visibly receded over the past century.

A Close Encounter with a Moulin

Our guide, Fee, ensured our safety as we approached a moulin, a massive hole in the glacier. These hidden dangers, often concealed by snow, highlight the importance of experienced guides when exploring glaciers. The intense blue ice created a surreal purple haze in the sky, an unforgettable sight.

Reaching the glacier's peak offered breathtaking views, and the distant sound of falling ice added to the awe-inspiring atmosphere. The tranquility of the winter season, with fewer tourists, enhanced the experience.

Local Delights and a Looming Storm

After our hike, we sought refuge in a local gas station/restaurant/bar, the only establishment for miles. The lamb burger was a delicious taste of Icelandic cuisine, and the genuine hospitality warmed us from the inside out. Fueling up was essential, with a storm predicted to bring winds up to 126 km/h.

With the help of our van's real-time road condition updates, we planned our route, aiming to outrun the approaching storm. The unpredictable nature of Icelandic weather added an element of excitement to our journey.

Conclusion: Embrace the Icelandic Adventure

Our Icelandic Ring Road winter adventure was a thrilling experience. From stunning waterfalls and glaciers to cozy van life and local encounters, Iceland offered unforgettable moments. Despite the challenging weather, the beauty of the landscapes and the warmth of the Icelandic people made it a truly rewarding journey. If you're seeking adventure, breathtaking scenery, and a unique travel experience, consider embarking on your own Icelandic Ring Road trip.
